It also allowed my husband to take a break from working, care for our home, care for me during some extremely difficult times, and recover from his own exhaustion. Those years helped me create a better future out of some shitty circumstances. Everybody else deserves that too.

Then two things happened: I sold Somebody’s Daughter AND the ACA became available. This combo allowed me to quit a job that was making me sick, devote significant time to managing my health, REST, find projects that paid me well & schedule them to happen at optimal times, and say no when I needed.

Just as I was getting real traction in my writing career, I had to confront the fact that my mental health was in shambles, and more of my physical health than I’d previously understood. Working full-time did not work for me. My husband, then boyfriend, worked two jobs to pick up my slack.

I’m no longer solely self-employed, and I receive healthcare through my employer, but I’ll never forget how the ACA gave me an option I never thought I’d have. Not just healthcare options, but the freedom of time that allowed me room to do something like heal. That shit takes time.
