The 1st colliery in Kent was beneath Dover. The coal seams were explored as a consequence of the second channel tunnel attempt at the end of the 19th century. Workers would either hop off at Shakespeare Halt or use the Aker's steps (333 of them top to bottom) to go between the town and the pit.
