I have not been approached by a union, or any faculty members interested in unionizing, about what changes those SVA faculty would like to see, or to ask what SVA’s plans are for the future. I want to make sure you have all the facts before casting a vote that could significantly (and negatively) impact you, as well as SVA’s work environment and culture, with no guarantee of any positive changes. I encourage you to get all the information you can. Don’t take the union’s word—or mine—without checking the facts for yourself. Over the course of the next week or so I will be sharing facts with you about unionization, along with references to information you can check for yourself, about the implications for you and SVA of a unionized faculty. It’s important you know these facts before you consider signing a union card or voting on unionization.” second screenshot continuing the previous email with the following content: “The union will make plenty of promises or guarantees about wages, benefits, and terms of employment, but you should understand that no union can deliver on these promises without SVA agreeing to them through the collective bargaining process. For example, the College has been bargaining for nearly two years with Local 306 that represents the theatre technicians who work at the SVA Theatre; to date there is no agreement. Affiliating with a union does not immediately translate to an agreement. I am aware a number of SVA faculty have been badgered and harassed by union organizers, including entering classrooms while class is in session, following faculty members to the restrooms, and employing other pressure tactics, to sign a union card. Some have resisted these efforts, but others signed a card because they felt pressured to do so. If you signed a union card, you have the legal right to withdraw it by sending the union a note in writing saying you want to withdraw it.
