Commuter cyclist

Cycles for commuting. Active travel enthusiast. Bad driving/bad infrastructure unenthusiast.
Grim. I came off in January on St Helen's Wharf. Took several weeks to be comfortable on a bike again. I now will unapologetically ride further out when it's frosty (not saying that would have helped here btw). Hope you heal quickly.

Estate cars still exist and have more usable space than SUVs anyway. Our family is too big for an SUV but fits in the former just fine.

We've got an estate: the SUV version couldn't fit the requisite number of child seats and had worse boot space. I can only agree with your assessment about SUV-driving parents.

The victim wouldn't be there for the initial hearing anyway, would they? She's pled guilty at the first opportunity. Not surprising given she's got away with not being charged with causing serious injury by careless driving (goodness knows how - incompetence/apathy from CPS?).
December 2, 2025 at 11:41 PM
Although it does save everyone's time, including the victim's if they don't want to be there: surely better for him to know that she's pleading guilty w/o him having to prepare for possible cross-examination?
December 2, 2025 at 10:58 PM
Weird that she was apparently only charged with careless driving rather than causing serious injury by careless driving. At least she had the decency to admit guilt straight away and hold her hands up: I expect that's the reason for the leniency.

Private jet costs perhaps?

There were a few of them sat admiring their handiwork on that roundabout about a month ago. It was exactly the stereotype that I would have guessed. Also, what is that variant on the Welsh flag on the right? I've never seen it anywhere else.

CO2/mile is most effectively covered by fuel duty: no need to rely on sketchy emissions tests. Just increase fuel duty appropriately.

They were indeed. My friend worked on them. The issue was that anything really radical (Dutch-style) needed much less traffic flow. I think bus companies would be ok with that, but it required bus gates etc. As a result the council had £200k to spend, but no good plans.

I put this down to the 2022 works done on The Plain. The injury rate was also much less before the works in 2015.
November 25, 2025 at 8:45 PM
That was my first guess. It could also be the same drivers not looking at cyclists on their left who joined from Cowley Rd just ahead of them. Or a mixture of both.
November 25, 2025 at 1:59 PM
It's better than the five years before that (~70) so the works done in 2022 obviously had some effect. Looking at the clustering though, you can see it's vehicles coming on from Cowley Rd that is the worst spot.

Danny Yee, who I think knows what he's talking about, points out that there are a lot of collisions there. bsky.app/profile/dann... That doesn't mean that Henwood's point is valid: it's not!
London's most dangerous junction for cycling has had thirty injuries in the last five years. Oxford's Plain roundabout has had forty injuries in that time.
November 25, 2025 at 12:27 PM
Do we need to even insist on that? It's more paperwork (and therefore cost) and ultimately even if someone buys one for leisure, they are probably still saving the taxpayer money (on average) by a reduced use of the NHS.

To be fair gorse blooms all year round hence the saying "when gorse is out of bloom then kissing is out of season". Your wider point still stands though.
November 15, 2025 at 4:54 PM
Apologies, but I have to ask: why's it parked opposite a junction?
November 14, 2025 at 6:36 PM
I saw. From what was reported that seems to be unfathomable, so I'm hoping they left some important details out (given the state of court reporting in general, that seems quite likely).

A highly distinguished one, I heard.

I loved Hitchcock's film of his comedy, The Birds.
November 12, 2025 at 8:58 AM
Exactly. It was registered in December 2024, so first MOT due in 2027. Perhaps poster didn't realise this is a personalised VRM?

The lawyer probably did advise that, but for the client it makes no difference: they would need a not guilty to keep their job (or have a prospect of being rehired) - the size of the punishment won't make a difference. Might be lawyer's fault, but I would say unlikely.

Ah, sorry. Should have guessed when the prosecutor was gender-swapped halfway through the story.
