Living in the Flower Flat, taking The Bruin to little kid dance at a place that only sort of reminds me of Suspiria.

The Bruin is having the time of her life being the cool big kid leading a little boy who’s maybe three on an elaborate chase through the big kid playground. A group of teens looks as happy as anything to be hanging out in the tot area together. Seems about right.

1) The mom at this downtown playground who took away the found squeaky dog toy ball her toddler wouldn’t stop putting in his mouth was being totally reasonable, but the poor kid isn’t happy.

2) My new favorite thing is the ever-shifting mix of kids at playgrounds, and when big kids are excited […]

Someone yesterday said Christianity was really just Judaism with extra butter and some Paganism on the side. Seems safe to assume that’s not fully theologically accurate, but it does keep making me chuckle.

Absolutely nothing not to love about an insert shot of two church officials about to open a Box They Really Shouldn’t casually tossing a bible off the table to make room.

And not only because it’s still Christmas for a little more than an hour!

“‘. . . a poem in eight cantos, the product of a country cleric. I wonder if he read it to his parishioners?’
‘Yes, yes I expect he did. . . ‘“

I am watching ‘70s BBC Ghost Stories for Christmas, and they are fucking delightful.

MIL kept hoping that the right shoes would fix her foot pain, but they never did. So I inherited about five years worth of barely-worn sneakers. But I’m finally through them. I’m going to miss having this little connection with her.

You can tell I’m old now, because the presents I’m really excited about are the comfy sneakers JB got me and the warm, machine-washable wool blanket my mom gave us for our bed.

Homemade challah French toast, gingerbread, tablet, & fudge.

Pretty sure JB liked the necklace I made him.

The Bruin’s favorite gift was easily the Elphaba & Glinda dolls she’s been going on about for months. Her happiest surprise was maybe the bottle of elderberry syrup I put in her stocking […]

Merry Christmas to all the naughty billionaires.

It sucks that my favorite Christmas thing, our neighborhood luminarias for unending blocks in every direction, was mostly wrecked by the wind & rain. But I love the dramatic Christmas Eve weather!
December 25, 2025 at 9:28 AM
LOL, told The Bruin she could get up to check whether the Christmas tree in this restaurant is plastic (yes, yes it is) “calmly, and as long as you don’t distract anybody else.” And she was full-on crouch-walking and ducking between booth dividers as she went like she was avoiding enemy fire […]

Went to the city as a family to see Into the Woods. The Bruin did so well and liked parts of it a lot, but it was still a little old for her. JB and I thought it was swell.

And then BART shut down under the bay on our way home, so we had the miniature adventure of figuring out transbay busses […]

Thanks, #BART Driver, for keeping it light and joking about horror sets and the lone employee on the platform with the safety vest & flashlight acting like a zombie as we rolled through those two eerily empty blacked out downtown stations. Made me smile & feel safe.

Also, gosh, nothing makes me […]

Everyone who gave elementary school concerts their bad reputation is a fucking philistine.

The kids mostly knew the words! The music teacher got surprisingly emotional! One girl just steadfastly refused to get on stage! One boy was really good at piano!

Okay, it was maybe a little long, but […]

Very slight disaster of a hannukah candles night, but the forms have now been obeyed, and nothing caught on fire that wasn’t supposed to be, so calling it a win.

Sitting in the living room, listening to JB do bedtime with The Bruin, watching the last of the candlelight, cuddling with the dog. Pretty good.

Took The Bruin to the city’s Winter carnival. The Fall harvest festival was better, but she had a great time. Spun wheels at giveaway booths and got several stickers, a water bottle, a fridge magnet, and a couple of candy canes. Tried the kiddie archery. Decorated a gingerbread cookie with dark […]

The small, stooping elderly gentleman I just walked by, assiduously squeegeeing the dew off the headlights of his Prius. ❤️

Finally got my yearly flu & covid shots today. Between birthdays, holidays, me being sick, JB and/or The Bruin being sick, and just forgetting, I’d been putting it off without really meaning to.

The little rose garden patio wedged into the center of the block between the German place, the vegan place, the fancy pizzeria, the B&B around the corner, and two of the thank-god-they-finally-started-constructing-new-apartment-buildings is both oddly divided and more pleasant than it has any […]

The weird, stupid, thrill of walking past a muddy, cruddy yard I’ve seen a million times, but the never-ending construction project got around to fencing the yard a couple of months ago, and this time the gate was open.
December 7, 2025 at 12:33 AM
On my way home from Mommy’s Afternoon Out at a Bar, and okay, the nice young couple walking the other way got to the book box before I did. And as I walk past she’s kneeling down and saying “Oh, should we take it? It’s a storytelling board game! It’s both of our things!”

And otoh this is […]

I know that humanity has observed this before, but really: The Moon! It’s making things bright tonight and it’s pretty nifty!
December 5, 2025 at 5:22 AM
#everythingistwrriblebut Tonight when I told The Bruin it was ten minutes before bed, she wanted to sit out on the porch with me looking at the full moon. We heard a train whistle, an owl, and the campanile from up on campus. She was surprised at the brightness, so we talked about reflected […]

During our binary counting exercise I was confused why they were so disappointed that we stopped at 64.

You don't know what annoying is until you have heard a bunch of fifth graders saying "one zero zero zero zero one one!" over and over

😐

damn meme should come with hazard pay for math teachers.
