It’s actually a misleading statement. It existed across the country pre-84 but was only formally brought under one federal legislative umbrella in 1984.

Haha - yes. I never did really. (She’s gone now). But it is an interesting insight into her era of North American assimilation: None of my cousins - including 2 sets with parents who both spoke Czech - learned the language, despite growing up surrounded by it at family gatherings.

This is so very true. I am so grateful to have been able to acquire Czech citizenship in the wake of Brexit and have even learned the language (and cursed my mom a bit for not teaching me!!).
But the exceptionalist brigade (you know who) derides it as a lucky add on. (Doubtless from envy.)

Oddly I had the exact flags in the same order as you on my now-defunct Twitter profile. A naturalised Brit from Canada, living half the time in South Africa with Czech citizenship from birth through my mother. (Excuse the tangential response, but I was too surprised not to comment!)

Australia is the other non-European nation that competes, which causes confusion. I think the reason is that both nations have embraced Eurovision as an annual event, and as it’s just a bit of harmless fluff, were allowed to participate themselves.

A bit of an exceptionalist way of putting it. There is a single market and the U.K. may ask to rejoin it. I think there’s absolutely 0 chance of the EU SM bending itself to form a distinct entity with the UK.

Conversely I learned Zulu with a very established teacher - was head of a university department in South Africa. Got the grammar but couldn’t get it moving. Duolingo is opening it up for me greatly.

All this 👆🏼 Duolingo is pretty good really. But it has to be used, preferably with other aides, and you have to actually speak when you are in the target language.

I find it very hard to call jus ‘au jus’. The grammar is just too clunky and wrong, so when I visit family in Canada I have the choice of sounding like a pretentious twat or cringing inside whenever prime rib or french dips come on the scene.

But I wasn’t ascribing it to you - you did that part. I was engaging the more general point that (unlike you) many people do in fact deny who they are attracted to despite physiological indicators. Interesting that you reduce such behaviours to simple ‘bad faith’ though.

What an uncalled for, nasty response. I was referring to those who push down desires and literally believe they don’t have them despite having them. But hey, let’s assume the worst of everyone and strike back. Let’s make Bluesky X! 🤦🏽

I don’t disagree at all. Was just pointing out that that was the thrust of the article: she couldn’t blame Brexit now without raising the question of why she hasn’t all along.
