The artwork depicts Napoleon, at the time a general, during the Coup of 18 Brumaire, where he would take power as the First Consul of France. This act is largely viewed as the ending point of the French Revolution and led to the coronation of Napoleon Bonaparte as emperor of France.

"Wellington at Waterloo" by Ernest Crofts, published in 1886. It depicts Arthur Wellesley, 1st Duke of Wellington, commanding one of his subordinates in the midst of the Battle of Waterloo (1815). In the forefront of the piece, you can see a man tending to his own wounds and another wounded man being dragged by his comrades. In addition, a cannon is being dragged through the mud, presumably to one of the artillery batteries along the line. In the background, you can see an artillery officer commanding his subordinates on horseback. Henry Paget, Earl of Uxbridge can be seen chatting with another commanding officer on horseback.
