I've been running a game of Mothership recently and this series of pics has been super inspiring!

This art rocks - and such a long campaign!

prior knowledge. It feels like at times it was made by committee, but the highs are so high, and the moment to moment gameplay feels fantastic. I grew to love almost all of the companions, and the fateful decisions in the grand finale had me grinding my teeth.

I think it's good, mostly.

I was reminded of the fight to the Archcdemon in Origins, the battle against Meredith in DA:2, the real highlights of the series. It’s really good.

I’m in such mixed feelings about VG, it feels a bit like it was made to bring in new players to the series, but the plot requires so much

interesting and exciting bosses. The act finales rock, and act 3 pulls it all together in a way that feels inspired. It’s so good. These moments are among the best and most memorable in the series.

do these cool companion questlines - it felt totally out of place.

Finally though, the good, the really good. Veilguard is at its very best during the act finales. Huge, bombastic set pieces, captivating villains,

It stank of focus groups and it was clumsy. I do not deride Bioware for trying. It is admirable, it is good, and I will defend the attempt against the gamergate chuds any day. But it doesn’t land, it’s a miss.

Another critique is the (spoiler) bizarre beginning of act 2 - where your

I think that while the attempts to do inclusive queer stories and to include the player’s identity into the game are very admirable, to me as a NB person, they felt strange, out of place, awkward and hamfisted. The almost clinical way the characters talk about identity never felt good to me.

But I can give this a bit of a pass, as it does largely improve in the second half of the game.

We gotta talk about the woke too, oh god not the woke. I’m a queer person, I’m an ardent leftist. I’m as woke as it gets in the minds of the chuds.

It’s really mixed, especially in the first act. Talking with Solas rocks, same with Varric. Companion dialogue often feels strange and stilted though, like every character had spent a few minutes workshopping the best words to say.

So Veilguard largely doesn’t care about worldstate. But okay, we’re in the north so fine, lets pretend I buy into the reason for ignoring those past decisions.
How is the story?

and lastly something about Hawke and the Fade. It seems like at one point these things were part of the plan and were cut for reasons unknown, likely just time and complexity. Veilguard feels worse for these losses and the absence of a ‘rescue from the fade’ mission loomed over the game for me.

Thedas equator the last 3 games can be safely ignored, those choices will just never come up. This sucks, I would have expected at least a real reference to the Inquisitor’s romance (not a single codex), something about who rules Orlais,

DA:2 and mention it in DA:I! This was and is huge, and it feels central to DA’s identity as a series.

VG makes at best weak references through the worldstate you build, but largely just pretends that because they’re above the

by the time of Inquisition there were dozens of decisions to track and honestly they were largely pretty well rewarded in the later games! You got your cameos, or your one off references. Varric would remember who Hawke had romanced in

tactical or like strategic depth is very much kiddy pool deep, but super complicated tactics was never the focus of DA. Unfortunately I did find on my mournwatch mage build that I didn’t really need my abilities and just holding leftclick for my laser beam was more

something which Bioware was once considered the absolute gold standard for in the game industry.

Combat - finally a dragon age game that feels nice to play. They’ve changed it again, kind of insane to have each game in the series play differently, but it's for the better. Feels fluid and punchy,

It just feels like the game the developers envisaged, the cumulative work of the entire series, did not come to fruition. Instead we have a game that has real and significant issues, especially in the writing -
