I appreciate how none of the fundamental problems with this technique have been solved since somebody did this with doom a year or two ago.

You can enable separated mode in the options in SS14 too, if you prefer.

I do not see what "Production environment" has to do anything? Nothing about containers *has* to make debugging harder, it's just that the tools and infrastructure aren't there to make it practical.
