Right?? Like was anyone ever saying that it wasn’t? Always felt like such bad faith arguments to me

But regardless I’ve seen enough to make it clear to me that vulgar auteurism will not *be* vindicated, but in fact has already *been* vindicated, for a while honestly. Even if you did take issue with the way people talked about the films, the films themselves remain their own justification

Granted there are also those whose careers are basically dead (Neveldine/Taylor, Rob Zombie). And certain directors who have achieved popular success you can still argue against; I’ve never been totally sold on Snyder, and JCS seems to have pretty much sacrificed any artistic integrity he had

Collet-Serra made a film last year that’s in the 10 most-watched Netflix films of all time. If we count Lucas, the prequels have also been completely embraced by the younger generation. Shyamalan remains controversial, but even he is far from the joke he was 10 years ago

Mann and the Wachowskis both had a film in the last S&S list. Ferrara and Verhoeven make European arthouse movies. Bay’s last movie was “Certified Fresh” on RT. Snyder, though still polarizing, has one of the largest cult followings of any current director

In fact, the reason why PWSA is still the poster child for VA if anyone ever brings it up is because he’s one of the *only* major VA-adjacent directors who is still disreputable. I mean, look at the others

People balked at the name and some of the rhetoric (bodies in motion, etc), which, fine, it’s a bad name, whatever. And I was late to the trend so maybe I missed some bad thinkpieces. But those films deserved serious defenses and they got them

And btw whether or not the people defending those films explicitly identified with VA is irrelevant imo- it was always (and still is) useful to me specifically as a descriptor of a trend, not as any kind of radical update of auteurism
