textbook case of the style BEING the substance. watanabe perfectly uses a genre born of old school samples and modern production to tell a moving story about three people haunted by their pasts, to an even better extent than he did with cowboy bebop

wake up dead man (rian johnson, 2025)

i just couldn’t with all the catholic bullshit. i’ve had enough of that for one lifetime to care about any of these people

fool night by kasumi yasuda (2020-present)

cool eco-horror seinen thriller that not a lot of people talk or even know about. i like the loose linework and panelling. if you enjoy chainsaw man but want something slower and with a larger emphasis on bureaucracy, you’ll probably like this too

demons souls ps5 remake (2020)

a lot of people don’t like the art direction of this version, but i never played the original and thought it was fine. regardless, it was neat seeing how many of its ideas informed not only dark souls but bloodborne too. i’ll play the original someday
