There are bookshelves flanking my desk and I’ve arranged them so that the writers I care about are always within arm’s reach. (Of course that means the configuration keeps changing over the years as books are exiled to the periphery …)

Mine is somewhat sedate, substantial, and over-academic. Could be larded with a little more cruft actually, just as a palate cleanser.

Wonderfully bizarre book. The only book on writing (that I know) whose ideas have utterly resisted absorption into my personal practice. The ideas belong to Barthes, they can’t belong to me.

I think I know Honegger from her articles on Bernhard. There was one about how he popularised the word “naturgemäß” in modern German …
