I lied on accident I think its not a defense mechanism as it takes them a while to shed them so it's not very good for escape. Did a bit more research and apparently they're more likely to use it to get rid of a parasite or something along those lines

It is!! Some sacoglossan sea slugs can decapitate themselves as a defense mechanism. The body then regrows from the head!
