George Washington Corner Society for the History of Medicine Wednesday, November 19 5:30 p.m. Lecture 6:30 - 7:15 p.m. Social Gathering Rochester Academy of Medicine 1441 East Avenue, Rochester, NY Savin, Sex and Scandal: Rethinking Abortion in Early Modern Anglo-America Abortion only rarely went to court in early-modern England or the American colonies. Before 1803, there was no English criminal statute prohibiting it. Yet the 2022 Dobbs decision declared that abortion had always been perceived as wrong in England and early America. This talk explores a few unusually-detailed legal cases as well as medical sources to explore how seventeenth-century people understood ending a pregnancy. Co-sponsored by the Rochester Institute of Technology's College of Liberal Arts Mary E. Fissell is the Inaugural J. Mario Molina Professor of the History of Medicine at Johns Hopkins University, with additional appointments in History and in History of Science and Technology. She is president of the American Association of the History of Medicine and edited the Bulletin of the History of Medicine for 15 years. Her fellowships include the NLM, Folger Shakespeare Library, and Princeton’s Davis Center. Her books include Vernacular Bodies (Oxford, 2004) and Pushback (Seal, 2025), a history of abortion from antiquity to antibiotics. I argue that a 1940s crackdown had the effect of making abortion more dangerous but not reducing its incidence.

George Washington Corner Society for the History of Medicine Wednesday, October 29 A Calculus of Compassion: Medicine, Emotion, and Identity in Nineteenth-century America 5:30 p.m. Lecture 6:30 - 7:15 p.m. Social Gathering Rochester Academy of Medicine 1441 East Avenue, Rochester, NY Healthcare access and outcomes in the contemporary United States are intimately connected to questions of identity. This presentation examines the historical development of health inequities influenced by the affective component of the doctor–patient relationship, particularly how white, male physicians of the past encountered and reacted to their patients, who were often non-white, female, or of non-normative gender or sexual identity. How did physicians feel about their patients? And how have patient identities— whether age, class, gender, race, disability, or sexuality—inflected this calculus of compassion as it was tallied across time and place? To explore these questions, this talk will discuss emotions in medical history and their implications for current healthcare disparities through a case study of one physician’s life and work in the late nineteenth-century South and West. Courtney E. Thompson is an Associate Professor in the History Department at Mississippi State University, where she also chairs the Medical Humanities Minor program. Her first book is An Organ of Murder: Crime, Violence, and Phrenology in Nineteenth-century America (Rutgers University Press, 2021); her most recent publication, co-edited with Dr. Kylie M. Smith, is Do Less Harm: Ethical Questions for Health Historians (Johns Hopkins University Press, 2025). Analyze blues narratives alongside materials from Harlem-based public health campaigns to uncover themes of alienation and access barriers within dentistry. 2. Foster critical thinking about how artistic expressions like blues can serve as visceral records of community experience, deepening our understanding of the triumphs and failures of campaigns aiming to improve dental hygiene among lower-income African American communities in interwar Harlem. 3. Better understand ongoing challenges in broadening healthcare access and achieving patient trust by examining understudied historical primary source materials. National Collaborative on Humanities & Ethics in Dentistry SPEAKER BIOGRAPHY Bronwen McVeigh (she/her) joined the Spectres and Camouflage project at University College Dublin as a postdoctoral fellow in 2024. She holds a PhD in Historical Musicology from the Eastman School of Music, where her dissertation was supported by the American Association of University Women and the American Musicological Society, and an MS in Medical Humanities from the University of Rochester School of Medicine and Dentistry. She earned her Bachelor of Music in Piano Performance and Composition at Michigan State University, where a Presser Foundation grant funded her research on anti-fascist marching bands in interwar Italy. GEORGE WASHINGTON CORNER SOCIETY FOR THE HISTORY OF MEDICINE "Ryan White, Hemophilia, and the HIV/AIDS Epidemic" Wednesday, September 10 5:30 Lecture 6:30 - 7:15 Social Gathering Rochester Academy of Medicine 1441 East Avenue, Rochester, NY In the 1980s, as HIV/AIDS ravaged queer communities and communities of color in the United States and beyond, a straight white teenager named Ryan White emerged as the face of the epidemic. Diagnosed with hemophilia at birth, Ryan contracted AIDS through contaminated blood products. In 1985, he became a household name after he was barred from attending his Indiana middle school because he had AIDS. As Ryan appeared on nightly news broadcasts and graced the covers of popular magazines, he was embraced by music icons and well-known athletes, achieving a curious kind of stardom. This talk will focus on Ryan's experiences with hemophilia and AIDS, as well as the contested meanings of his life, death, and afterlives. Paul Renfro is an associate professor of history and an affiliate faculty member in the Women's Gender, and Sexuality Studies program at Florida State University. He is the author of Stranger Danger: Family Values, Childhood, and the American Carceral State (Oxford University Press, 2020) and The Life and Death of Ryan White: AIDS and Inequality in America (University of North Carolina Press, 2024), which earned an honorable mention in the general nonfiction category of the Florida Book Awards. In addition to these arguments, and the more theoretical parts of this book that focus on the archive, I'm so glad that I was able to write about Dickie Orpen and Percy Hennell, two medical illustrators who have not had enough said about them and their wartime work.

In _Putting Plastic Surgery on Paper_ I approach surgical history through drawings and photographs, showing the huge role that this visual culture played in shaping the material, professional, emotional, and aesthetic parameters and narratives of plastic surgery.

Spring 2026 Publication The Journal of the American College of Dentists is a scholarly publication presenting proactive and informative perspectives on issues affecting the dental profession and society. The Journal has been published since 1934, and its first editor was Dr. William John Gies. This special issue is in collaboration with the National Collaborative on Humanities and Ethics in Dentistry (NCHED). NCHED aims to create unique and valuable opportunities for reflection, learning, and teaching on ethical issues in dentistry and to stimulate progress nationwide in using arts and humanities to improve dental practice, research, policy, and education. This special issue will delve into the human side of dentistry through the lens of the humanities and ethics. We welcome full-length manuscripts addressing ethical and humanities-based approaches to dentistry and related health professions. Topics of interest include, but are not limited to: • The history of dentistry • Dentistry in media and popular culture • Dentistry and literature • Dentistry and the arts • Religious/spiritual/cultural understanding of the mouth/teeth/dentistry • Humanistic approaches in dental ethics • Conceptual issues in philosophy and dentistry (e.g., How do we define “disease” in dentistry? What is the role of the dentist?) • Intersections of oral health and emotions • Narrative depictions of psycho-social issues in oral healthcare • Dentistry and whole patient care (the biopsychosocial approach) • Integrating health humanities and ethics in dental education Submissions must include: 1. The full name of each author; 2. E-mail address, mailing address, and phone number for each author; 3. Degrees and institutional affiliation (if appropriate) of each author. Submissions should: 1. Be between 1500 and 3000 words in length, including an abstract of no more than 250 words; 2. List 3-10 keywords after the abstract. These terms represent the key topics presented in the article; 3. Use inclusive language, including gender-neutral pronouns, unless referring to specific persons; 4. Sufficiently de-identify any descriptions of patients and/or clinical encounters; 5. Include disclosure of any conflicts of interest; 6. Confirm with a statement that the work is original and that it has been authored entirely by submitting authors and their research team; 7. Designate a corresponding author; 8. Follow the American Medical Association Manual of Style, 11th Edition, for text and references. Additionally, by submitting a paper, authors affirm that no portion of the document was written by artificial intelligence tools. The use of AI-based tools for grammar checking or formatting is permitted, provided it does not alter the core ideas, analysis, or authorship of the document. All submissions deemed suitable will undergo a peer review process. "Harnessing Narrative Power to Guide Pedagogical Innovation in Dental Schools" Michelle V. Moncrieffe, MA, CHES April 22, 2025 via ZOOM 1-2 pm EST Michelle V. Moncrieff, MA, CHES is a lecturer and interdisciplinary researcher at the University of Maryland College Park, where she holds a joint appointment with the College of Arts and Humanities, and the School of Public Health. She is the Principal Investigator and Director of the Narratives and Medical Education (NAME) project. Her research focuses on exploring how patient narratives influence clinical practice. As well as being a certified health education specialist (CHES), Michelle was a health journalist for over two decades. Although Michelle has not lived in her hometown for many years, she still describes herself as a Londoner. LEARNING OBJECTIVES 1. Observe the underutilized power of narratives in offering a unique and important insight for dental trainees into the oral health challenges faced by underserved communities. 2. Understand how public libraries make ideal partners for bringing together dental trainees and community members in need of oral health care. 3. Explore a new and innovative narrative dentistry database aimed at supporting oral health pedagogy.

GEORGE WASHINGTON CORNER SOCIETY FOR THE HISTORY OF MEDICINE "A Certain Interest in Curiosity": Manipulation in Early Medical Photography and the Erotics of Pathologized Viewing Brynne McBryde, PhD Collegiate Fellow University of Maryland Wednesday, April 16, 2025 5:30 pm Lecture 6:45 - 7:15 Social Gathering In 1869 an innovative new medical journal the Photographic Review of Paris Hospitals (Revue photographique des hôpitaux de Paris) made its debut. Unlike previous journals and textbooks, which relied on hand-made prints for illustrations, the Photographic Review published photographs taken in the Paris hospitals, touting their “truth” and “superiority to other visual mediums.” What are we to make, then, of the fact that several of the photographs in the journal have quite clearly been manipulated? This talk looks carefully at the types of images that were published in the Photographic Review, the ways they were manipulated, and the dynamics of elite male social networks in nineteenth-century France to explore the motivations of the journal’s editors and readers and how they have become sanitized by notions of medical objectivity today. Together, we will consider the role that pleasure played and plays in viewing and sharing images of extreme physical difference and what, if anything, separates medical looking from other forms of visual consumption.
