Following the railroad's closure in 1977 and the route abandonment in the 1980's, part of the route became hiking and biking trails, including the Hiawatha Trail outside Mullan, Idaho.

The drydock was drained, and in 1955 it made the long trek inland over road, swamp, and railroad to its current home on land at the Shelburne Museum, the last surviving walking-beam sidewheel steamships.
