New blug: feeling like I’ve gotten better at conceptualizing and worse at verbalizing over time
I don’t know how this works for everyone else, so here’s an example: suppose I’m engaged in a back-and-forth with a knowledgeable interlocutor on a reasonably nuanced topic, say, baseball or the desired behavior of a particular programming language construct or why a particular person we both know behaves the way they do. Or suppose I’m reading a blog post that lays out a multifaceted argument in favor of some proposal. As soon as I understand what the person is saying (which is very much not a given), an entire response—enthusiastic partial agreement, hesitant elaboration, and multi-subpoint refutation framed by indignation—materializes all at once within my body in pre-linguistic form, and I feel overwhelmed trying to even capture it for myself, let alone convey it to another party. In practice, this usually manifests as me staring into space while speaking comically slowly, or stammering and replacing words with noises which, to me, capture the underlying emotion and therefore both denotation and connotation, but to everyone else just sound like noises. A far cry from the supposedly “articulate” communication my teachers once commended!

World Series Game 1: Dodgers @ Blue Jays (W, 11-4)

We recently got a television off Marketplace Zuckerberg. The main challenge is remembering to look at the screen, because I'll be focused on my scoresheet while listening attentively to the announcers and then forget to actually watch.
Scorebook filled out in pencil for the Toronto Blue Jays' (Yesavage) 11-4 win at home over the Los Angeles Dodgers (Snell) in Game 1 of the 2025 World Series, October 24. The Dodgers took an early lead in the 2nd and 3rd inning on a series of walks and singles, until the Jays' center fielder Varsho tied the game with a two-run home run in the 4th. The score remained even until the top of the 6th, when the Dodgers' starting pitcher Snell loaded the bases with no outs on a walk, hit, and hit by pitch. This prompted a Dodgers bullpen implosion, allowing the Blue Jays to score 9 runs in the 6th inning across 12 plate appearances. Notably, the Jays' Addison Barger accomplished the first pinch-hit grand slam in World Series history during this inning.

I saw the late Michael Morgan conduct the music from West Side Story with the Oakland Symphony and four remarkable soloists, two years before his passing. It was far from perfectly polished, yet utterly rapturous nonetheless, perhaps my favorite classical concert ever?

I went to a baseball game alone on Friday night, and it was the most fun I've had in recent memory!! I found a great ticket on last-minute resale. Brought my radio and scored the entire game listening to the broadcast with one earbud in. Giants won, and there was a Pokémon drone show afterwards!

In late February, Michael Grimes, a senior official at the Department of Commerce and former investment banker at Morgan Stanley, conducted brief interviews with employees of the CHIPS Program Office, which oversees the grants. In interactions some described as “demeaning,” Mr. Grimes asked employees to justify their intellect by providing test results from the SAT or an IQ test, said four people familiar with the evaluations. Some were asked to do math problems, like calculate the value of four to the fourth power or long division.

Finally bothered to learn about Daylight Savings Time
Poorly hand-drawn infographic titled “Daylight Savings Time for Fools (me), California Edition”. A long bar represents a year in the Gregorian calendar. The first ~quarter (January through March-ish) is PST (UTC-8), then lose 1 hr :( into PDT (UTC-7) for ~half the year from March-October/November-ish, then gain 1 hr :) back into PST (UTC-8) through the end of December. There are two side-by-side comparisons using sun and moon icons to illustrate the progression of daylight throughout the day. The “Normal” version shows the 9AM-5PM workday starting after sunrise and ending past sunset, whereas the “+DST (lies)” version shows the 9AM-5PM window shifted earlier so that it perfectly aligns with the period of sunrise. A disclaimer says “not to scale; enlarged to show texture”.

In a follow-up speech, delivered on September 6, Hicks provided (slightly) more detail on what she called all-domain attritable autonomous (ADA2) weapons systems. "Imagine distributed pods of self-propelled ADA2 systems afloat...packed with sensors aplenty.... Imagine fleets of ground-based ADA2 systems delivering novel logistics support, scouting ahead to keep troops safe.... Imagine flocks of [aerial] ADA2 systems, flying at all sorts of altitudes, doing a range of missions, building on what we've seen in Ukraine."

I recently started doing Friday NYT crosswords from a book and they're significantly harder than the Fridays I usually solve on the website. Not only do you have to saccade back and forth for the clues, but the cultural references and crosswordese trends from 2009-10 are so different!

User mattwojo commented on December 16, 2024 before closing the PR: "Thanks for the contribution here and appreciate your attention to detail. We have decided to keep as-is.. part of that decision is that more and more folks are using AI chat to access guidance and tables don't always translate well in that context."
