They've been dropped into a growing medium of rescued spent compost from hanging baskets and window boxes, chicken manure and seaweed pellets, and soil dug out of the forest floor the acorns were harvested from, to inoculate them with all sorts of exciting microscopic life.

Carefully snipping off each bough and then sections of the trunk as the rootball gradually settles back into the hole, means that this tree will reroot, survive, and live a new life with fresh wood. The old wood is now destined for landscaping and habitat creation.

Haa, great photo.
A few years ago after another named storm I drove around harvesting trampolines from hedges and fields, they got turned into a small polytunnel.

Beautiful birds, and it's great to have a semi-tame one as a pet, but do remember that they are both A, and invasive species; and B, delicious.
