At this point we're just disagreeing on the definition of meaning. To me, it doesn't matter how the text was generated. What matters is the effect it has on the human recipient. I concede that by your understanding LLMs do not create meaning.

Even autocomplete has created meaning before by turning random guesses into funny jokes of what you might say.

That's what I mean by "through player actions". By itself, the LLM has no meaning. Meaning is about the player interacting with the LLM to create meaning together. Without the LLM that interaction would not have happened.

Of course the furry porn guy thinks his opinion matters more than the guy that works in the field. Wanna bet a solid chunk of the stuff you jerk off to is AI generated? The cat is out of the bag and AI needs to be directed in useful ways, instead of outright hated.

...Do you think LLMs don't have explicitly defined guidelines? Might want to read up a bit there, Sport. And just like procedural map making there will be times it goes off the rails and produces weird shit.

A LLM using predetermined constraints designed by the devs to provide NPC communication fits into this discussion. The vast majority of games would not benefit from a LLM but there is very clearly a market that would. Thinking about it, dating sims would fit too but that's a very depressing topic.

LLM will probably have no place in most games for a long time if ever, but to completely discount them does a disservice to the procedurally generated moments that we already love in games like Rimworld or Dwarf Fortress.

I won't argue there, and taking the walls off NPC conversation would be hard to work with. But going off the farm comment, how many people play trucking sims? What if you could have a road buddy to chat with, while you drove, if you wanted to?

Exactly how I've been thinking of this. We've already got AI everywhere in games creating meaningful content like within Dwarf Fortress or Rimworld. How about a game of Project Zomboid where you have NPCs you can befriend that react to the things you are doing?

A large group of those players that do care are the ones that have made the biggest modding differences in open world games. The fact that you can play mods that turn Skyrim into a blacksmithing game shows there are people that do want to immerse themselves.

You're right, but I think that LLM can create meaning through player actions. In exceptionally open world games like Skyrim, Minecraft, or Kingdom Come there is a whole lot of dialog possibilities that can make the player feel special for doing something that has no meaning to the plot.

Talk about how current events end up represented in various books!
