When I say "I'm sorry" that someone had to go through something, I mean it. I genuinely feel for them. It's like the most basic way to express empathy when listening

I can get people being upset at others trying to score "good people" points, but this seems a bit much.

Genuinely not trying to be hostile or a dick here, but depending on context and delivery "I'm sorry you had to go through that" seems like a better response than an empathetic stare and nod.

It's basically just saying "you go ahead and vent, I got you"... am I wrong?
