Some of the chocolate bars I used to eat had little characters moulded into the squares. These standard issue ones don't. I suppose those were made for children... I was a child once, innocent, happy, dreaming of the future... I think I wanted to be a doctor. When I finally unwrap the bar in the safety of my quarters, the taste makes me feel ill. I eat it anyway. I tell myself it’s better to hide the evidence. Dogs can’t have chocolate. It’s toxic to them. I think about that sometimes... when I eat it now. When my stomach turns and I feel bile in my throat. It's not supposed to make humans sick. I smooth out the paper wrapper against my knee, slowly flattening every crease. All disposals here are logged and sorted, part of the Empires initiative to be more "green". The same Empire that turned three inhabited colonies to dust just last year with "tactical" nuclear strikes. There's definitely something ironic that someone less broken could laugh at... When was the last time I laughed? Probably when my sister and I painted that model mech kit she got me for my birthday. There was more paint on the floor than on the Ancyor. It's hard to believe how quickly things went downhill after that. I've got to hold onto something though, hope she'll get better, if not... what's the point in any of this? I tear the paper into tiny strips, placing each one on my tongue carefully, trying to will those happy memories back into existence. But they're gone. The pulp slowly dissolves in my mouth, tasteless except for the lingering chocolate. I've learned to suppress my gag reflex (although not for this reason). My body protests but I swallow it all, I spend the next hour feeling nauseated. No evidence. Nothing to find. Nothing to trace back to me.

This ritual was intended to cement the most fundamental truth of my existence: I had no agency, no control. None. Not over her actions, certainly not over my fate. My body has long since stopped fighting back… even my instinctive responses belong to Her now.  Whether I fought with desperate screams and flails or accepted it in silent resignation made no difference, I remained powerless to stop Her. Her will existed beyond negotiation, beyond appeal, as final and absolute as death itself.  The starlight had burned out any resistance left in me, like a dying celesial light, leaving only a corona of tiny stars that shimmer around Her silhouette whenever She enters my vision. I know that my life continues only because She allows it to, long after I’ve given up hope, just as the light from dead stars travels for years after they’ve been extinguished. Only with time did I understand that this was merely the beginning, the first instance of an act that would become inseparable from my training. I would discover, too, that it ranked among Her favorites. It’s been years since I last flinched, and of course that distinctive sound sends me to my knees immediately, anywhere, anytime. In our quarters, in training facilities or in the hangar in front of the engineers. My mouth opens obediently, ready to receive the barrel that will inevitably follow.

It's always the sound that drops me to my knees. That soft metallic click. Leather sliding against metal. The steel being drawn from its sheath. My muscles know before my mind does, responding to a command that isn't spoken. My body remembers what my consciousness tries to forget. Knees hit concrete before thought can even form. Spine straightens. Head tilts back. Mouth opens. All automatic. All perfect. All Hers. I still remember the first time. How She held the barrel between my teeth, safety off, finger hovering near the trigger. "Submission" She called it. Not a request though.. a command. "You must accept my absolute power." She explained while I trembled, mouth stretched around the cold metal, tongue pressed against the bitter taste of gun oil. "Your life exists at my discretion. A good hound understands this.. welcomes it." I failed that day. Flinched when She pressed deeper. Gagged when it hit the back of my throat. Fear flooding my system despite my desperate need to please her. The correction lasted hours. By the end I couldn't stand. Couldn't form words. I was bleeding all over. The bruises alone took weeks to heal. But I had learned. Now the sound alone brings me to position. Mouth open. Waiting. Ready. Tongue extended slightly past my lips, trained to receive. She slides the barrel in slowly, deliberately. Watches as my lips close around it, as my throat relaxes, as my tongue cradles the underside of the metal. "Look at you.." She says with cold amusement. "So eager for it." What would your old comrades think if they could see you now? I don't flinch at the mockery, don't feel shame anymore. Those emotions were removed long ago, replaced with the simple satisfaction of performing correctly. "Good dog." She murmurs as I swallow, when I perform as instructed. It's not about pleasure. Never was. It's about demonstrating control.. Her ownership of every function of my body. About proving I understand my purpose. I don't flinch anymore. The others look away when She draws Her sidearm in the common areas. When that distinctive sound echos and I drop, mid conversation, mid step, mid thought. Some pretend not to notice as I kneel, as I open, as I wait. Her weapon is always immaculate. I clean it myself. Hours spent ensuring every part gleams. No one ever mentions the irony.. how the metal that splits my lip, chips my teeth, bruises the roof of my mouth is kept in perfect condition while the receptacle for it breaks a little more each time. "What is a mouth for?" She asks sometimes, the barrel resting on my tongue, heavy and familiar. I try to answer around the metal. The garbled sounds amuse Her. She withdraws just enough. "I couldn't quite hear that mutt. Repeat yourself." "Service" I manage, voice hoarse, before She slides it back in. "Correct." Perfect obedience means not caring if the safety is on or off. It means accepting that She could pull the trigger at any moment. It means understanding that my life continues only at Her mercy. This is what it means to be a hound. This is what it means to be Hers. Each time Her sidearm slides free, I surrender again. Each time metal meets tongue, I reaffirm my place. My purpose. My devotion. After all, what else is a mouth for?

Hey all, I successfully defended my PhD back in August last year, but in my postdoc l've often been confused and it's becoming clear that I shouldn't have gotten a PhD. How do I explain to future employers that this 5-year gap in employment was due to me successfully completing a PhD, but that they should really consider me as more of a candidate that has a high-school, maybe partial completion of college level of aptitude? I'm having trouble getting considered for entry-level engineering and science roles because they're slotting me into the overqualified bucket when I'm clearly not.
