In the last pages of the book (eg 314 starting with “He is still Vertegio Keev”) Tchaikovsky veers towards a thrilling description of the Buddhist concept of emptiness. The fact that it is biology-based, and embedded in a rollickingly dualist narrative, does not detract from that one bit.

Hummingbirds are beautiful and amazing AND they are so aggressive! I found that out in a hummingbird sanctuary/garden in the Santa Marta Mts in Colombia last year. They were in near-constant battle with each other.
