Went to see Nobody (2025) last night & it was delightful. A Chinese animated fantasy comedy film about 4 low-level, no name monsters faking it till they make it by posing as the heroes of Journey to The West. A lot of heart & 1 or 2 of standout action sequences here as expected of donghua nowadays.
November 11, 2025 at 5:24 AM
Today’s addition:
another Takanori Tsujimoto movie, Red Tears aka Sword of Blood (2011) starring the legend Yasuaki Kurata.

The 2nd film’s out this weekend. Really fun, heartfelt & gorgeous fantasy movie, especially in the novel scenes that features impressive CG with the characters, environments & action. The real world action is well done too. Also Sailor Moon’s iconic line is spouted mid attack/mid air to the villain.

First rewatch of the Spooky Season. Who you gonna call? Why Sammo Hung, Lam Ching Ying, & Mang Hoi of course. Encounters of the Spooky Kind II (1990) is still an absolute blast from start to finish. A great blend of sorcery, ghosts, monsters, & amazing martial arts fisticuffs.

Prisoner of War (2025) is excellent. Terrific period martial arts action movie of course but also a truly gripping POW camp drama. Great performances by Scott, Peter Shinkoda & all around as well like from Masanori Mimoto & Donald Cerrone. Looks & sounds good too with a very effective soundtrack.

Did a 2nd round with The Legendary of Hei II cuz I had to see more of Luye dressed like Trunks & smacking the shit out of people. This movie really deserves more coverage. It’s so great.
September 10, 2025 at 5:38 AM
First time watch. Wonderful ghost romance w/ some great wuxia action & practical creature work sprinkled throughout. Leslie Cheung & Joey Wong’s chemistry is superb, plus it’s dope to see Wu Ma as a badass Taoist swordsman. Watched on iTunes, every frame of the movie & new restoration look gorgeous.

Chinese animated sequels are two for two this year: first Ne Zha 2 & now The Legend of Hei 2. Even more ambitious story & improves on every aspect of the first, especially in what were already excellent action scenes & gorgeous backgrounds/environments in this fantasy adventure.
September 7, 2025 at 1:04 AM
Portrait In Crystal (1983). This was great. A bloody Shaw Bros mix of wuxia horror & murder mystery accompanied by a synth score. The action is on the more fantastical side akin to Bastard Swordsman. Also there’s a poison that makes people’s stomachs expand & explode.

‘Nother mail day.
Today it’s the HK blu of Kung Fu Chefs with Sammo Hung I got off eBay. Wanted to see this one for awhile and the English dubbed version on YouTube ain’t gonna cut it.

August 27, 2025 at 2:48 AM
Continued the theme from She Rides Shotgun of Black Coffee cinema about ex-con dads & unfortunately their family facing gangland consequences of his past trangessions but still trying to save his daughter with FARANG/MAYHEM! Wouldn’t it be neat if Nick Rowland & Jude Poyer made a movie together?
August 8, 2025 at 6:16 AM
Saw She Rides Shotgun & I love it. An excellent crime thriller with Taron Edgerton & Ana Sophia Heger giving powerful performances as an estranged father-daughter duo on the run. John Carroll Lynch & Rob Yang are great too. And some of the music sticks in my head in the best way.
August 6, 2025 at 2:57 AM
Just got back ICK. I missed a few minutes of the beginning cuz no previews for this screening I guess. But it was great fast paced, creature feature horror comedy fun. Brandon Routh & his character’s early 2000s millennial playlist are so charming & he deserves a bigger career.
