Ok - after doing more research on this dumb thing, I have concluded that the official scorers maybe don't like to throw "Fielder's Choice" around, but they do score these plays in every other way as a FC. I think. Good lord.

That is to say, there is a conspiracy...

Broheim, they have silehced us.

I think we're both in some kind of general haze, like, drunk on fame!

They can try to Shut Us Up, but as long as these True Heads are riding the fucking rails - I am on THEIR SIDE.

I said it!

Ok.

Thanks!

Outstanding.

I guess at this point I'm most confused by what the hell the official scorers are doing out there.

Vin Scully later in the game describe the batter in the 4th (not scored FC) as "he hit into a force play", but later says the batter in the 5th (scored FC) "reached on a Fielder's Choice".

Huh. Neither of those were officially scored as FC - although a similar play in the bottom of the fifth was.

Here's another example from the 1983 NLCS Game 2.

Baseball Reference scores this: Groundout: 3B-2B/Forceout at 2B; J. Fimple to 1B.

This isn't scored FC?

Here's an example - this was not scored FC - it's a wonky play (it should auto-play at the 1:05-hour mark). Baseball Reference line is "Groundout: 2B unassisted/Forceout at 2B; M. Marshall to 1B":

Groundout: 2B unassisted/Forceout at 2B; M. Marshall to 1B.

Let’s just say that I watch a lot of older baseball games. I am often seeing a thing happen that seems like a Fielder’s Choice, but a look at Baseball Reference does not score it that way.

I am not even clear what I don’t understand at this point. It’s like one of Rumsfeld’s “unknown unknowns”.

That’s more or less what I thought it was, but there are apparently a bunch of fussy sub-rules, and I do not yet understand them.

(Sorry, I don't know how ALT text works sometimes - the link is a short interview with Vin Scully about his process for preparing to broadcast a game)

They should open the roof and maybe we can get a nice rain delay in.

Apologies to the fine people of Tomah for the typo...

If you've got the MLB at-bat thing, I recommend folding in some Ben Ingram calling Braves radio, from the archives. I am mesmerized by him (also, I kind of hate the Braves, generally).

Someone will give him an insane amount of money, and he'll really thrive there!

(That's one thing that could happen. Also, someone will give him a bunch of money and he washes out. In any case, I think someone will give him a bunch of money!)

That was a weird Cubs season!
