Demolition of the historic Phillips Congregational Church at the corner of 700 East and 500 South has begun.

The owner of the property is listed as ROBOT BUTCHER SHOP, LLC.

It appears to me that the purpose of the demolition is simply that the parcel is worth more money as an empty lot.

An interior view from 1909 of the Critchlow Apartments, 379 1st Ave SLC.

These images showcase a disappearing bed that can transform into a desk. The apartment boom of the early 1900s spurred the popularity of these beds, many of which were for sale in local Salt Lake City furniture shops.

The Critchlow at 379 1st Ave, SLC. Built in 1908 by John Q. Critchlow who promised soundproof floors with brick walls between apartments, a unique and notable feature at the time.

1-bedroom and 2-bedroom apartments rented in 1908 at $30 (about $1K in 2025 dollars) and $46 (about $1.5K) a month.

The old Foothill Liquor Store at Lamplighter Square, Salt Lake City, was Utah’s first self-service liquor store. It opened Feb 1967. Customers were able to browse and select the items they wanted and then check out at a cashier stand, not ask for something behind a counter. #slchistory

The Judge Building, 8 E 300 S SLC, built in 1907 by Mary Judge and designed by the Judge family architect David C. Dart who also designed the Judge Miner's Home, now part of Judge Memorial High School.

Fun #SLC history! In 1902, 30-year-old Nell Young Clauson Brown reinvented herself as “Dr. Nell C. Brown: Hair Physician.” Her business operated for only a few years and was based in the Templeton Building in downtown SLC. More details at www.slchistory.org

Explore the hidden history of SLC's old Franklin Ave, now known as Edison Street.

Located between 200-300 South Streets and State Street and 200 East.

This mid-block alley was once a micro community of Black Salt Lakers.

Very different attitudes toward community and history between these two owners of prominent historic buildings of Salt Lake City. Thanks to Michah Christensen for saving the B'nai Israel Temple! Hopefully the owners of the other will be inspired to follow. #slchistory #historicpreservation

An electro-static machine was found in 2000 during renovations of the Karrick Block on Main St in Salt Lake City. These machines generated static electricity and were used to cure a variety of ailments. No idea what happened to it since. #slchistoy

Christmas Street, aka Glen Arbor Street (1735 S 1500 East), in Salt Lake City is a tradition that began in 1946. The 1947 event was described by the Deseret News after the event occurred, and then the street became a Salt Lake City Christmas destination to see. #slchistory #utahhistory

The Lollin and Karrick Buildings on Main Street in #SLC. Trying to get my writing done to post about these buildings. Long story short- the developer was required to preserve them to build the 222 Tower. These two have historic protections because they are local Salt Lake City historic landmarks.

Can this building be saved? Should it? It already has! And it is a building that you know and love. These photos are from 1999- the Karrick Block at 236 S Main St SLC.

I'll be posting more about this preservation story. Stay tuned.

Thinking about #nativebeans that I grew in my #saltlakecity urban garden. I'm trying to find the actual origin of these "Fremont Beans," supposedly found in an ancient ceramic pot. I am skeptical. They are distinctive and huge.

Exploring native Indigenous foods this week. First up, the Four Corners potato. A wild potato species distinct to the American SW. evidence indicates ancient people brought it to Escalante area of Utah and tended to it in gardens. Called the 4th sister, or lost sister. PHOTO CREDIT: Alastair Bitsóí
