Activist, author, artist, voice actress, and path blazer Alice Wong has passed. She still thought of gracing us with some words of hope for the future she dreamed for us:

This is Alice's friend Sandy Ho, posting. Per Alice's wishes, this message is being shared at the time of her passing. Hi everyone, it looks like I ran out of time. I have so many dreams that I wanted to fulfill and plans to create new stories for you. There are a few in progress that might come to fruition in a few years if things work out. I did not ever imagine I would live to this age and end up a writer, editor, activist, and more. As a kid riddled with insecurity and internalized ableism, I could not see a path forward. It was thanks to friendships and some great teachers who believed in me that I was able to fight my way out of miserable situations into a place where I finally felt comfortable in my skin. We need more stories about us and our culture. You all, we all, deserve the everything and more in such a hostile, ableist environment. Our wisdom is incisive and unflinching. I'm honored to be your ancestor and believe disabled oracles like us will light the way to the future. Don't let the bastards grind you down. I love you all.

The Board of the SCMS Queer and Trans Caucus is seeking submissions for the 2025 Chris Holmlund Graduate Student Writing Prize! The winning essay will be published in New Review of Film and Television Studies in 2026. One of the leading media studies journals, New Review of Film and Television Studies publishes peer-reviewed research on the theory, history, aesthetics, and politics of expressive screen culture. The QTC Caucus thanks the journal's editor, Matt Connolly, for sustaining publication space for this prize! Criteria for submission: - Essay must be authored by a graduate student who is a current member of the Queer and Trans Caucus of SCMS - Essay must be in the fields of queer or trans cinema/ media studies - Essay should be at least 6,500 words in draft form, with potential to meet the journal's publication requirement of 8,000-10,000 words - Essay must be submitted to scmsqueer@gmail.com by November 15, 2025 Graduate student members who are a part of the Alex Doty Queer and Trans Caucus Mentorship Program are encouraged to contact their mentors about potential essay submissions. Using feedback from the prize committee, the winning graduate student will prepare a full article in line with New Review of Film and Television Studies' Instructions for Authors, which can be found here: https://www.tandfonline.com/action/authorSubmission?show=instructions&journalCode=rfts20 The prize committee will identify a winner and begin the mentoring process by December 15, 2025, with the final essay due to the journal by March 15, 2026. I was genuinely excited and proud to get an invitation to protest the Gaza genocide—and the Dutch government’s complicity in it—by my university, in the official newsletter. This announcement at the beginning of the AY, seems to mark a more significant shift in the board’s approach. Or so I hope.
More news: Noise protest on Monday, 1 September This coming Monday, a noise protest will be held calling on the government to take action for Gaza. During the air raid siren at 12 noon, work will be halted. Please be aware that UvA staff and students may also take part in this protest.
