Statement on Recent Billboard & YouTube Chart Developments
Statement on Recent Billboard & YouTube Chart Developments Over the past few days, two major announcements from YouTube and Billboard have raised understandable questions and concerns within the fandom. We want to clearly explain what is happening, what it means, and what it does not mean for Stray Kids and STAYS. What YouTube Announced YouTube has announced that after January 16, 2026, it will no longer deliver its streaming data to Billboard, meaning YouTube streams will no longer be factored into Billboard's U.S. or global charts. You Tube stated that this decision follows over a decade of partnership and extensive discussions with Billboard that did not result in meaningful change. Their position is that every fan matters and every play should count equally, regardless of whether a stream is ad-supported or subscription-based. YouTube argues that Billboard's weighting system undervalues ad-supported streams, despite the fact that streaming now accounts for 84% of U.S. recorded music revenue and that YouTube remains one of the largest platforms for global music discovery, engagement, and fan connection. What Billboard Announced Billboard confirmed that YouTube will be voluntarily withholding its data and responded by reiterating its methodology changes. Effective January 2026, Billboard will continue to weight paid/subscription streams more heavily than ad-supported streams, using a 1:2.5 ratio (paid streams counted 2.5x higher than ad-supported). This is a slight adjustment from the previous 1:3 ratio, but it still does not count all streams equally. Under the new system: • 1,000 paid/subscription streams = 1 album unit • 2,500 ad-supported streams = 1 album unit Billboard states this reflects differences in revenue, consumer access, and engagement. YouTube fundamentally disagrees and believes this approach ignores the reality of how fans consume music today. Longstanding Issues Billboard Has Never Addressed For years, fans across many fandoms have raised serious concerns about chart manipulation, platform loopholes, and inconsistent enforcement - particularly involving Spotify. We have repeatedly seen: • Songs charting weekly with clearly inflated numbers • Millions of streams removed during Spotify's monthly cleanups • Over a year, those removals adding up to hundreds of millions of deleted streams • Yet those same songs and artists continuing to chart as if those numbers never existed If streams are fraudulent enough to be actively removed later, it is reasonable to question whether those songs ever had the legitimate numbers required to chart in the first place. Billboard has never meaningfully addressed this, nor have they penalized artists or platforms that repeatedly exploit these loopholes. Against that backdrop, YouTube's push to address stream weighting is a valid concern, and Billboard's response speaks volumes to us. What This Means for Stray Kids Right Now Importantly, Stray Kids are not facing an immediate comeback in the coming weeks. Any changes taking effect in January do not pose an immediate threat to their current achievements, records, or accolades. While the potential removal of YouTube data from Billboard charts could affect long-term U.S. chart longevity, it does not impact Stray Kids' existing milestones. Why YouTube Still Matters YouTube is not only about Billboard charts. It remains a critical platform for: • Global award show criteria • Korean music shows • Year-end awards • International visibility and discovery • Global fandom growth While weighting varies by country and chart system, YouTube continues to play an integral role in Stray Kids' worldwide success and visibility. For that reason, we encourage STAYs to continue streaming on YouTube as we wait to see how this situation develops.
