Pokémon Legends Z-A (11/8/25)
I paid literally 0 attention to Legends ZA for the duration of its marketing cycle. I've never grown up with Pokemon and for me i feel like l've never been able to truly enjoy these games because of it. Brilliant Diamond was ok and Heart Gold was an improvement, but never did I truly feel like I could enjoy Pokemon as a series. Because I missed out on it during my childhood hood and couldn't really develop favorite Pokemon or regions or types. Main motivation behind my getting the Switch 2 bundle with ZA is because it was a JRPG and I'm not fond of MK as a series either. Coming out of it though, I think I can say I finally *get* it to an extent. Legends ZA's biggest boon is its setting and combat and how well they play into each other. I've always been biased to smaller scale settings; my favorite JRPG ever is set in s small city state. It's apparently been a point of contention amongst fans, but I think Lumiose City works great for this game. Could it do with more visual variety Absolutely! But as I wandered the streets and wild zones, as I returned to Hotel Z for dinner with Team MZ, I couldn't stop myself from getting attached to it all. The small setting also works well for the Z-A Royale, since all those tight spaces makes finding and evading opponents really engaging. I also like how the combat is in real time and weaknesses are identified on the move list. As someone unfamiliar with type matchups, it was a godsend. I also started getting attached to some Pokemon actually. This is the second time I’ve used Feraligatr, and while his Mega Evolution is uhhhhhh, he’s still served me super well as a tank in combat. I found a shiny Budew randomly while out and about and made it a Roserade, my first shiny ever. I kept a Fletchling on my team for the entire game and was surprised by how much I liked Talonflame. The Chespin you get from a quest ended up becoming a mainstay on the team, and I grew quite fond of her. For the first time, it felt like I actually made a team of Pokemon I genuinely loved rather than just the ones I heard were good. I don’t know how objectively strong Roserade or Talonflame are, but they’re mine and I really like them. Legends ZA was a nice surprise for me this year. My favorite Pokemon of the very few that I’ve played and I could genuinely see myself going back to it once day. They did good 🫡

Dragon Quest I HD-2D (11/5/25)

(Note: I haven’t played and beaten any other version of DQ1, so these are my thoughts on DQ1 HD-2D on its own terms, detached from is variants)
In my eyes there are two halfs to the DQ1 HD-2D experience, the first half where you focus on saving Princess Gwaelin and the second hald where you start focusing in on the Dragonlord. That first half of DQ1 is pretty good. The plots nothing special, but what's there feels like a natural progression of the events of DQ3, with all the charm intact. Playing as only 1 guy seemed more intimidating than it actually ended up being in the beginning. I found myself comfortably deleting regular mobs and bosses, while more challenging, didn't feel out right ludicrous. Saving Gwaelin felt like a balanced challenge. Tough at points but never demoralizing. Also, the fact that you can potentially carry Gwaelin through the entire second half of the game is pretty charming. It's just a shame that after rescuing Gwaelin the game starts to fall off a bit, mainly in its combat. I'm glad the decision was made to keep the hero solo for this. Rarely are protagonists completely alone for the majority of the adventure. DQ1's protagonist I think carves out a pretty strong identity because of this. But MAN did it feel like the latter half of the game was a but over-tuned in the enemies favor. One v. 3 battles can be a struggle enough, but when those 3 enemies start getting 2 actions per turn I think it's gone too far. Far too often in the second half did I feel like I was getting completely demolished due to factors out of my control thanks to this. Getting hit with a status like paralysis when you've only got 1 character to work with might as well be an instant game over. Or maybe I just got shit enough RNG for the first enemy to go twice, hit two times and have one of them crit me, killing me before I even had the opportunity to strike. Bosses in the second half are especially guilty of this, that Golem outside of Catlin WILL give you shit if you're unlucky. Or maybe the Goregoyle at the Shrine of Rain will double crit for fun. Or maybe you'll get put to sleep and watch helplessly as you get jumped. Meanwhile, unless you've used Wild Side, you're going once per turn. Once. Needless to say, the latter half of DQ1 suffers from difficulty that feels artificial. I don't feel like l'm losing because my strategies are weak, but because I failed an invisible check to go first or just got bad rng. I can't really control when/if multiple enemies get ahead of me in the turn or if they'll get the luck to demolish me in a single turn. If auto-saves didn't occur as frequently as they did this game would be a lot more annoying. At least the Dragonlord himself wasn't too bad. Fun but frustrating experience in the end. While i did enjoy myself, the action economy and how out of control it felt at times was a big blow. Hopefully DQ2 steps up.

Final Fantasy Tactics: The Ivalice Chronicles (10/12/25)
Final Fantasy Tactics: The Ivalice Chronicles Key Art Hahahah the world really hasn't changed in 30 years..... They were not lying, Final Fantasy Tactics is one of the most politically relevant pieces of our time. So much of what it had to say about the political landscape of the world can still be applied to how things are today. The rampant discrimination between classes, the weaponization of religion, all of it. People have lauded this narrative for years, and having played through the game for myself now, it's hard not to see why. As an SRPG l'd say the game plays well. I played on the easiest difficulty since tactics games are generally not my forte, and I'd say I got a decent challenge out of it. Just because it was easy mode didn't mean I could skimp out on strategy, and barring a couple of exceptions, none of the maps felt overly mean. Job system was fun to mess around with, as any good job system should be. Some jobs are definitely better than others (chemist being relevant the whole game) but most classes should give you some sort of value. For me, FF Tactics was always one of those classic bucket list games that l'd say l'd play "one day" without ever knowing when "one day" would be. Thankfully, this remaster made the decision for me. Great SRPG and definitely high up on my admittedly minuscule FF totem pole.

Liked this one about as much as Kiwami 1. Story was mostly fine until the end where it just kinda felt like random plot twists reveals were shotgunned for real no other reason than being plot twists. No styles was a letdown but combat was still fun. 0 remains king imo

Mega Man Star Force DX (10/1/25)
The Star Force Legacy Collection was announced last month, and considering how much l enjoyed the Battle Network games, I was beyond excited. Normally l'd wait for the legacy collection to drop, but in actuality I brought a DS shortly after beating BN6 last year thinking that we wouldn't see a Star Force collection for a bit. I brought an r4 cart and put Star Force DX on it since I heard it added a whole bunch of content and the like. Seeing as my interest in SF was high, and the Legacy Collection only contains the original 3 versions of Star Force 1, I decided to say screw it and play through SF1 early via the DX mod on my DS. The core of Star Force is very much rooted in BN, which makes sense since this is its sequel series. The setting is far off in the future and things have definitely changed, but jumping in was mostly smooth. The major difference is how battles play out. You're using an over the shoulder perspective and have movement limited to just 3 tiles, instead of the 3x3 grid of space you had in the BN series. Enemies have a lot more real-estate now, being able pop up on any tile except the 3 you're given. This sounds a bit unfair on paper, but in all honesty I don't think it mattered all that much. It might take a little bit of getting used too, but the game gives you tools like the lock-on to help you even the playing field. Certain brother cards can also hit wide areas so you have reliable coverage. Star Force 1 was pretty easy overall in all honesty, though I can't say whether that's the DX mod doing the heavy lifting or not. I'd say the story compared to most BN games is above average. As a first entry it's miles ahead of BN1's narrative that's for sure. There's a lot of discussion on loss and loneliness, how people distance themselves from others due to past traumas that weigh on their minds constantly. Brother bands also seem really interesting. They're indicative of the power of our bonds, which is likely nothing you haven't seen before, but in the world of Star Force forming a brother band is viewed as establishing a real personal connection. As if when created, two people are telling each other that there's nothing to hide from one another. I really like this actually. The power of bonds as a theme in JRPGs is about as common as it gets, but with the brother bands there's an attempt to delve a bit deeper into just what makes that bond powerful. It's not a super in-depth explored topic as SF is only about 16 hours long, but the attempt is clear, handled decently well, and has heart in it. Good times were had. I'd put Star Force DX on the upper ends of the Mega Man totem pole. Not the absolute peak of what the RPGs have to offer, but a high point nonetheless. Can't wait for the Legacy Collection to see how 2 and especially 3 plays out, since l've heard high praise for 3 in particular.

Klonoa: Door to Phantomile (9/22/25)

Decent platformer with a surprisingly sad ending. Started this almost two years ago and ended up putting it down until now. It’s the definition of just ok imo. Looks good and the platforming is fine, but nothing really stood out to me.
