I wonder if it's set up this way because of the various kids online safety laws that are being passed around the world. I think those are what's forcing these settings to be on by default, since you'd need to be age verified to opt out in some places.

Really interesting. I think people often forget that history is such a surface-level patchwork of artifacts and stories that survived. When you make a game or novel based in a historical setting, you'll always have to fill in those gaps based on your creativity. That's what makes it fun!
