Crisis at NASA

It's very bad news all round for NASA science, but the worst hit is Astrophysics (which includes cosmology) where the proposed cut is about two-thirds, which would be devastating.

Found out this morning that the 3.5m USD grant my team won has been cancelled as a result of cuts to science funding in the US.

How's your day going?

I'm grateful for the chance to write this and so impressed by all the amazing things scientists are doing in Central Illinois and the impact the NSF/NIH are having in my hometown. Many thanks to the folks at @sciencehomecoming.bsky.social for this initiave and all the resources to get started
David Jurgens credits his childhood in Central Illinois 🌽 for setting him on the path to becoming a professor at University of Michigan. Illinois science does a lot—from removing PFAS from water to fighting drug-resistant infections. 🧪🏠 @davidjurgens.bsky.social

The lack of sociology journals in the Seattle public library is concerning but flipping through physical first editions of American Speech from (exactly!) a century ago is delightful

AI music generation has gotten, like, scarily good these days. Was listening to an 80’s City Pop playlist on Youtube, liked a song, and tried to search for it only to find out it was 100% AI generated. For creators, these tools must feel like a massive improvement over the Vocaloid days.

Good interdisciplinary work is hard. I just read an ASR paper with a theory section that made me see something in a completely new light—then hit the methods section and saw a just... wrong... and completely unvalidated use of LLM embeddings for empirical evidence to support the theory. Ugh.
