How can you fail at a trap dug in your path?” She reached for his hands again, but he tucked balled fists under his arms. “A wise man can see the trap and step over it.” Could they have seen it? Could they have guessed when they planned for Muster? He needed to believe he could not have. Guilt would tie his sword to his side. In evidence, he sat steeping in his shame, knees slacked open, his arms binding his own chest so he could barely breathe.

10/7-since Bk 2 is delayed due to a total lack of funds I'm working on a novella covering "off camera" events in Bk 1. Haven't settled on a title nor roughed enough to do this often but here's a 1st clunky vibe at it. Work is therapy

Was that necessary? Seizing her tighter, he kissed her but drew away as suddenly to plead,  “Must I go? How can I ride away from you again?” She bore him down, deeper. “You have no home now that does not make room for the safety of  your people. I will share this burden, but there is no putting down.” He was beyond either weeping or raging, and for that she was at least a little thankful. I'm working my way through funding a delayed release of Hearth Saga Book 2: Path of Thorns. Part of that funding will be through the sale of very inexpensive works of art. I know this isn't for everyone, but that's okay. It's for the people it's for.

8/30 Day after posting about a delay in release, a storm swept through & dropped limbs from our tree into a neighbor's yard. My nose now says it's 2026 for sure. Can't keep this up for that long but I'll post new stuff & follow y'all. Hang around?

8/17 Crawl is a good word--verbs are great. I struggled with this one in editing, though. Do slugs crawl? Technically no, but slither sounded so deliberate, like she'd planned out what to say. In the heat of anger, crawled hit more truly

More than adequate in the beginning, this place had been such a thing of aspiration, he’d crawled over bones for its privilege, and believed the journey fair. Now, the whole chamber was revealed as a dank, cramped tomb. Behind gaudy tapestries, stone cankered with spongy mildew, barren floorboards creaked under his feet like a chorus of crones begging for scraps, and the hollow report of his steps announced the utter desolation of emptiness–it was all so cheap, so common, shabby. She always talked too loud when she was wrong. “Wolves, listen, wolves, and don’t be so cocksure. You sound like your brother,” Taja said as she rubbed her knuckles with henbane and calendula. The stench burned her nose, but the night was cold, and her old bones ached. The child’s constant need to be entertained did nothing to improve the aching, and that’s why a story had seemed just the trick to pass the day's last rows before sleep overtook Valo’s evening spurt of wildness, but the little one had a gift for trying Taja’s goodwill as it waned. Valo sniffed, picked a thicket bur from the tail of her matted braid. “Never seen no wolfs–wolves. And Hyva’d say the same thing.” Taja took the burr and chucked it over the grate. Smoke drifted up through worn thatch, melting the first dust of snow, and the fire sizzled and spat with every fresh drip. “If I wanted to hear from Hyva, I’d have him come and sit with us. Have I called him in? No. I sent him to the barn to light the smudges and oil Busu’s harness, tire himself out. So don’t tell me how he sounds, and don’t sound like he would. 8/9 Brush the noun rather than the verb & the choice was hard today. Time is strained so I leaned into Thith because he's reliably understandable in snippet form. This excerpt is such a subtle, silly insight, though, maybe it's not so obvious

Horse and saddle, the dusty, jostling, backwoods road, air thick with darting insects, rats rustling in the brush, all that would usually pique his nerves with inconvenience and discomfort instead made him glad for once to be out in the freshness of a new day. No matter the shabby stable to which he rode, its unremarkable and secluded dilapidation all the better for his quiet return to the Kellman’s grounds on foot.
