How about a little random late night Sam & Max media? When finishing up the remastered edition of The Devil's Playhouse, we almost added this beat to the opening credits, to show a glimpse of the inside of Max's mind and add an extra title card spot for the remaster... but decided not to.

Bonus fun fact: This episode was originally named Sympathy for the Devil, after the Rolling Stones song. The day before we announced the title, we checked with a lawyer who said using it okay as long as the song itself wasn’t quoted in the episode.

And again, inspiration for the colored outlines and how they work was taken from Steve Purcell's paintings which use rich color instead of black for outlines, as well as his background work on adventure games like The Secret of Monkey Island, and the way Sam & Max Hit the Road used color & outlines.

It also meant we could sort of "short circuit" the sytem and have it display a light outline in dark areas, if we wanted. This not-final in-development screenshot shows the effect, which ended up evoking old EGA adventure game backgrounds in a way we were maybe too excited about:

We did also ultimately do outlines in the game, but they are colored instead of pure black. Tim our graphics programmer gave us a really beautiful outline system that let us choose the outline color based on whether the shape was touching light or dark pixels. You can see them if you look close:

We ultimately thought the stylized comic book look was a step too far for the game. It worked in that office sketch, but didn't translate as well to many of the other scenes, would be very costly to make, and was a huge departure from the original. So we got to work on "the original but way nicer."
