I enjoyed The Black Cat (1934) very much. A very unique pre-code film about trauma, obsession, the long lasting horrors of war and those who profit from them. It has a very nice scene that uses Beethoven's 7th Symphony, which is always good

I really enjoyed the excellent Tokaido Yotsuya Kaidan (1959, the Nobuo Nakagawa one), a beautifully staged and quite eerie ghost story with opressing drama that slowly builds up until the horror inevitably arrives.
