If it doesn’t matter, the report is not just damning of this government and its behaviour, but damning of Ontario itself. At least the Ontario I’ve lived in my entire life. It has a long reputation of being an officious, often uptight place of law, order and regulation. Endless regulation. The very existence of the LCBO and that Sunday shopping was controversial in recent living memory are just two examples. For the average little guys in Ontario, to use a term Ford is fond of, how much unfairness and unaccountability do they get to leverage for their own benefit, like at Ontario Place? Whatever the industry, be it the provision of hot tubs, farming, real estate, shopkeeping or anything else, the auditor has shown there are some people who get to work around the orderly way of doing things, following the rules — and some who don’t. How much can Ontario take of that? Maybe quite a bit. Ultimately, it’s voters who decide when a government has gone too far and should be booted out, and voters aren’t indicating that’s now. In the meantime, perhaps we need to recalibrate how Ontario is perceived, because a lot has happened without political consequences, so we might not be the province we think we are.
