Darkness spills into every inch of the world, the crook of an elbow and the gaps between eyeball and lid. It holds onto the body like something physical; its embrace is all-encompassing and amnesia-inducing. In its grip, I remember nothing but this moment. It is a heaven I wish I could have created, yet it evaded my grasp. Perhaps, I could still give this gift to my brethren… The idea calls to me as it always has. People have claimed me to be cruel, but I know a lack of existence can only be a kindness—for in this nonexistence, I know peace. In the throes of humanity’s worst nightmare, I am happiest.

Lear is a prince without a nation after a series of poor decisions by his father. Now, he lives in the Coral Highlands; camping, cooking, and killing dragons in order to survive. Life is easy when all you need to worry for is food. When N, a prince of another land, comes and pretends to join Lear’s father in his quest to conquer dragons, it’s obsession on first sight. Even worse, there’s something Lear knows about this stranger which no one has told him: N can speak to dragons. Lear doesn’t know how he knows that, but what he does know is that he’ll need N’s help if he ever wants to find his brother again.

Three scenes from the first chapter. They’re disconnected from each other! Lear’s daemon is Sirius, a lion. Cheren’s is Aegea, a herding dog. Sawyer’s is Leta, a direwolf.
“Do you think she’s under orders to be silent?” Cheren asked one day. He and Aegea were in Centra City, wandering around. Some vendors and shops were open; he was craving something familiar. So far, all he’d seen were shops selling Kalosian food, junk food stands, and some general “dinner” places. In Unova, he would’ve gone into them blindly but Cheren didn’t trust this land he’d been dropped into. To anyone else, his query would be nonsense. It had been days since they’d last seen Lear, and just as long since they’d discussed them. “Probably just… doesn’t want to speak,” Aegea said. Her tail wagged, agitated. She always got worked up thinking about daemons ever since they’d seen Ghetsis’ monstrous soul; he’d used her unsettled form to make her into a weapon. “Lear speaks enough for both of them, doesn’t he?” And speak Lear did. He talked regardless of if anyone was listening. His bodyguards were the only ones who’d never yelled at the prince, and the only ones who’d never left him in a fury. They seemed to have endless patience for the singularly most annoying man in the world. Maybe, they were loyal to him for his kind actions. He had given everyone on Pasio everything they could ever need. Cheren held the faintest respect for him for that. Most people dismissed Lear as easily as he dismissed them. It was a fun show to watch: Lear would say one word, and immediately lose all the grace afforded to him. He could have personally saved their lives and the citizens of Pasio would still despise him. Somehow… the prince didn’t care. He ruled over them all like the prince he was rumored to be, and yet acted as if they were mere ants beneath him. Lear laughed at anyone who dared stand up to him, champions and bodyguards alike. “My name is Leta,” the wolf said. She looked up toward Sawyer before stepping away from his side. Leta sat down between them, tail curled around her paws. “I’m a direwolf. What do you want with Lear and Sirius?” “Nothing,” Aegea responded. She tried to step forward to match Leta’s challenge, but Cheren moved his foot in front of her. She huffed at the silent command but listened. “We noticed she—Sirius, I mean—doesn’t talk. It’s weird. We’re curious.” “Don’t call them weird,” Cheren scolded her. She glanced up at him and stuck out her tongue. It looked weird from a dog, but it made him smile. “But, yes, that's why we’re here. And,” he made sure to keep his expression bland and clean of emotion, “because we’ve seen how he acts. Does he get along with anyone?” Sawyer gave him and Aegea a once-over. It was full of judgment and suspicion; clearly, he’d taken Aegea’s comment as an insult. It was annoying, sometimes, having her there to blurt out his true thoughts but it was nice to be able to look at someone else’s soul for their truth, too. Leta looked angry. Her tail was still, and her jaw was open; teeth glinting in the sunlight. “Don’t expect to get close enough to speak to Master Lear anytime soon,” Sawyer said, nodded, and then left with Leta following a step behind. Clearly, he intended this to be the end of the conversation. Daemons didn’t usually follow people’s expectations, but maybe someone as disciplined as Sawyer had managed to change her nature. Leta turned and glared at Aegea. “He’s not weird.” Or not. Sawyer scolded her in a soft tone before continuing back to the safety of Lear’s presence. The prince didn’t seem to have noticed his absence. Icy blue eyes looked at Sirius, just behind Lear’s shoulder. Her mouth was open, tasting the air, and her tail was still. A low breeze blew through the area. She was just as disinterested as she had been from the beginning. “You’re very good at pretending.” Cheren let his voice become cold and sharp as if he were talking to Ghetsis. Like Sirius was someone unforgivable. As if she deserved to suffer every pain in the universe. “But, you can’t fool everyone.” Unsurprisingly, his words came as a threat, but not to who he expected. Lear went deathly still. His shoulders tensed, his smirk faded away into a blank expression, and he stopped breathing entirely. Sirius didn’t react in the slightest. After a few seconds she huffed and headbutted Lear’s shoulder, and the prince began to breathe again. “How do you…” Lear began, voice utterly unlike anything Cheren had ever heard from him. It was soft and scared. There was no confidence behind it, no superiority. It was just Lear,—just a bunch of bugs trying to hide away from the light of day—and he was terrified of Cheren. Or, rather, he was afraid of the idea of someone else knowing his daemon was pretending. Wasn’t that interesting? Aegea—seeing the growing storm in Lear’s shaking hands, hearing Leta’s low growl, and feeling Sirius’ gaze moving to them at last—grabbed his wrist in her teeth and, as gently as she could, dragged him away. Lear did not call out after them. Cheren gave him a small wave of dismissal as he was dragged away. He expected to hear a yell of annoyance from the prince, but no such sound met his ears. For the first time since Cheren had met him, Lear was silent.

Title: Mama’s Boy Summary: A hand tapped on his shoulder; a polite query for him to turn around. Lear’s expression fell for the first time all night as he turned to face the person behind him. The ghostly, barely-there outline of his mother stood behind him. She was smiling, eyes watering as she stared at him. “Lear?” The prince’s knees gave out under him. On Halloween, the walls between the living and the dead thin for a night. Normally, this has no impact on anyone save for those with an affinity for the undead, but on an island inhabited by gods and their chosen companions it has unintended consequences.
