My own definition of the word. To me, a society - or a species - is more or less "civilized" to the extent that it sees intentional violence as unnecessary.

We're obviously a long way from that.

as long as a country/humanity promotes war and destruction we are not civilized.

Civilized beings help other people as much as they can and only uses violence if it is absolutely necessary to preserve themselves.
