The latter study is based on data from individual voters, but the increasing polarization can further undermine political elites' capacity to punish copartisan politicians for subverting the democratic process.

This rising polarization is detrimental to democracy regarding punishing undemocratic behavior as shown in Graham and Svolik (2020):

people “will not cross party lines to punish a copartisan for violating democratic principles."
