Had a very good day in the rainy, foggy, soggy woods with the Skagit Land Trust doing the annual Heron Colony Nest Count

Being outside with good people and doing bird-related science was a big pick-me-up despite the soaking drizzle and stinging nettles
Bare alders and maple trees with clusters of great blue heron nests in the branches against a flat gray sky A handful of old and broken great blue heron bones A shell from a hatched great blue heron this past spring A blow down, a fallen great blue heron nest, on the forest floor. It's roughly the size of a large laundry basket

I'm id-ong old taxidermy birds today so we can group them by region and one of the sandpiper was mislabeled as a common snipe.
I was gonna say spotted sandpiper but the spots don't continue past the rump and the back feathers have pale edges. Thoughts?

At Orca Recovery Day last weekend me & 200+ volunteers from 3 conservation organizations planted over 700 trees to turn reclaimed pasture into stream-side forest :)
