Useless from a grid management perspective, sure.

(though this analogy fails as it still focuses on solar’s capex, not taking into account wind’s 2x CF)

I believe floating wind is the perfect balance of these ideas: we’re able to both stand on the shoulders of great engineers while also exploring new, uncharted frontiers. My mantra for 2025: Let’s make (offshore) wind cheap again! 😉 Its nbd, just the future of the planet depends on it.

9/n:
I’m a big believer in both disruptive innovation and the Lindy effect – that is, things with longer pasts tend to have longer futures. (And yes – the ability to hold seemingly contradictory ideas is fundamental to the human existence.)

It is imperative we deploy any and all clean technologies as fast as economically feasible. Especially ones that can provide clean baseload power. But, still, our industry lacks coherent messaging. So here I am at the end of 2024 filling a self-perceived void: (offshore) wind’s hype man.

💸 As the torch is passed to the next generation, we must continue to find innovations to further decrease the cost and speed up the deployment of wind around the world. Remember when fixed-bottom wind was less than $0.06/kWh in 2010s?? We need to get back there, and we need to get there fast!

🦾 So much credit goes to the forefathers and foremothers of our industry who are just now entering the twilight of their careers. I hope they can look back on their careers with great satisfaction and pride.

Some related thoughts:
⚡ Nearly 1 out of every 10 electrons powering our homes, cars, data centers, etc comes from the wind.
👍 This milestone represents a truly remarkable engineering achievement, given that nearly 40 years ago, a 1 MW machine was unfathomable.

It will be a very close race, likely less than 1% difference between the two sources. Either way, wind should grab the title in 2025 and hold on to it for a bit! Yes that's right: from 2025-2028ish more electrons will be delivered to the grid by the wind than by the sun or by splitting atoms.
