It’s normal to want to do things or to be fascinated by things, I don’t think you should tell yourself it’s bad. There’s a difference between being curious and being distracted / unfocused. If you’re focusing on one language and are drawn by another, you eventually -

When encountering real situations be it in media or in interpersonal relationships. TLDR people generally misinterpret everything and therefore don’t put in effort where it counts

And thin that they will get results this way. At least from what I’ve observed in myself and others, is that the most important thing is comprehension and attention, the role of grammar and vocab study is to aid comprehension

Another thing, it’s over a VERY large timescale. Like thousands of hours. I think they’ve heard that you can learn a language with tv and what not but just flick on a show for 15 min (that they barely understand, which is also a problem the input has to be comprehensible)

Depends on what exactly they’re doing because I can personally attest that I’ve learned a lot from media, if anything most of my vocabulary comes from it. The problem is that it works on a very large timescale and doesn’t slot in nicely with classes and their progress measures

There is overlap with class material and real life, but they’re two very different environments. If you self study you also learn very different things, not to mention not all abilities in a language can be tested in a standardized way

Yeah of course, languages classes primarily are to set you up for real life scenarios, and the tests you take are to see how well you’re progressing in the class not in the language per se.

Isn’t this sort of a false equivalency? Doing well on a test in class means you did well on a test in class. Not claiming that these people have amazing abilities, but you can easily pass a school test with minimal prep even if you don’t have any skills to back it up.
