Insufferably pedantic PSA: these signs are actually Swedish. You can tell because Norwegian speed signs have a white background, not a yellow one, and Norwegians spell control with two Ts (kontroll) while swedes do one (kontrol). Yellow background signs are only for temporary and have a diff shade

They weren't carved to do printing, but to implore divine assistance by faithfully producing the Tripitaka. Im not sure they've ever been used to print, actually. The building was also carefully designed to passively preserve them despite being wood

It was carved multiple times as an act of religious faith to help defeating the northern invaders (various steppe people and the mongols)! It's known as the eighty thousand Tripitaka because of how many characters it is in chinese
