Worth a reread - it’s about that a bit but also about class and disability and good and evil and has an awful twist at the end (won’t say too much!)

I love that it adds to Jane Eyre somehow- it feels like a brilliant sequel that totally enhances the original. I love both and feel like they’re a pair that should be read together

Read it 30 years ago at school and has stayed with me - thank god for English Lit A levels in the 90s exposing me to books I would love, and starting a life long passion for reading!

Loved it, and all of his work. Was a toss up between this one and Safe Area Goražde for my pick this morning - recommend it too. Footnotes in Gaza is brilliant as well- his books are so good at conveying things I find much more inaccessible in prose narrative
