On December 1, 1955, Rosa Parks was arrested for refusing to give up her seat to a white passenger on a city bus in Montgomery, Alabama. This act of nonviolence sparked the 13-month Montgomery bus boycott, which ended with the U.S. Supreme Court ruling segregation on public buses unconstitutional.
