You might say that the problem is that there is a difference between the church and Jesus and only Jesus matters for the gospel. While technically correct, reality is much messier. People legitimately expect that if Jesus is real, that should have some influence on his followers.

As a pastor, I have determined to make church a safe place for theological and biblical questions. I do not see questions, or even doubts, as the enemy of faith. In fact, I see barriers to questions as much more dangerous.

I am not suggesting that people should surrender their convictions or that we all need to agree. But being a Christian is about our connection to Jesus and not our place on the conservative-liberal continuum.

What do people mean when they make such a statement? I think they are saying that they have read certain passages of the Bible, listened to preachers and teachers, and have come to an interpretation of what they think it means.

I know, from my own apologetics experience, that we both feel the pressure to come across as 100% certain and that deep inside, we don’t have all the answers. The truth is that people don’t expect us to have all the answers.

I will say that theological diversity in general is good. People who disagree with us should not be labelled as either ignorant or unfaithful. We can hold to our own convictions, while respecting the differences of others. #theology
