He served as Chief Judge of the court from 2006 to 2012 and assumed senior status in 2013. Wolf is recognized for his high-profile rulings on public corruption, including cases involving corrupt Boston officials and organized crime figures such as Whitey Bulger.​Before joining the federal bench, Wolf worked as a Special Assistant in the U.S. Department of Justice after Watergate, Deputy U.S. Attorney for Massachusetts, and chief of the Public Corruption Unit, where he received the Attorney General’s Distinguished Service Award. He is also known for human rights work, leading Integrity Initiatives International to promote anti-corruption worldwide. Wolf retired from judicial service in November 2025, citing a desire to more freely speak out against what he views as attacks on the rule of law.
