You don’t need clever wordplay.

You need relevance, curiosity, clarity - and sometimes a little urgency.

Subject Line #3:
“Before you email your clients again…”

Implies urgent mistake.
Plays into fear of doing something wrong.
Teases value in the email.

Result: 43.8% open rate (IP law firm, U.S.)

Subject Line #2:
“I noticed something about your site…”

Triggers curiosity.
Personalised feel.
Works well for cold outreach or email audits.

Result: 41.6% open rate (Legal tech SaaS, UK)

Subject Line #1:
“Need help with your startup contracts?”

Direct. Relevant to entrepreneurs. Framed as an offer to help.

Result: 44.2% open rate (B2B law firm, South Africa)

I rewrote subject lines for 4 different legal clients (estate planning, business law, IP, and ALSPs).

Most went from 17% to 38–45% open rates.

Here’s what worked:

Law firms are sending “monthly newsletters” that sound like HR memos.

Your clients don’t want generic.

They want curiosity, relevance, & clarity.

If you’re still sending generic newsletters... and not client-focused, or strategically written emails…

You’re leaving money on the table.

Mistake #4: Sending cold emails from a new email accountIf you blast 100s of emails from a fresh domain, you’ll be blacklisted.

Instead, warm up your email by sending a few per day for 2 weeks.
April 21, 2025 at 1:11 PM
Mistake #3: Spammy subject lines“URGENT!! Limited-time offer!!!” = Spam folder

Instead, use curiosity & clarity:

Example 1: “Your Legal Case: Next Steps”

Example 2: “How to Protect Your Business from Lawsuits”

Mistake #2: Not setting up SPF, DKIM & DMARC records.

These tell email providers you’re a legit sender.

Without them, Gmail/Outlook think you’re a spammer.

Mistake #1: Using free email providers (Gmail, Yahoo, etc.)

Your firm should use a custom domain (yourlawfirm.com) for professional email.

Gmail sees free emails as less trustworthy = More spam filtering.

Why It Matters?
If potential clients never see your emails, they won’t hire you.

If past clients don’t see your follow-ups, you lose referrals.

Email deliverability is the #1 underrated growth hack for law firms.
April 21, 2025 at 1:11 PM
Most law firms send important emails (contracts, follow-ups, newsletters) that never reach the inbox.

If your open rates are below 30%, you have a problem.
