I’m sorry, but this is no “implicit cultural generalization.” This is explicit racial discrimination. The word “Chinese” does not add anything to the substantive message she’s trying to communicate here. Taking away this word would not impede the audience’s understanding of the sentence.
NeurIPS acknowledges that the cultural generalization made by the keynote speaker today reinforces implicit biases by making generalisations about Chinese scholars. This is not what NeurIPS stands for. NeurIPS is dedicated to being a safe space for all of us. 1/3
