All Force use can be summed up under four overlapping categories. The first is the manipulation of physics. This category includes, but is not limited to, telekinesis, which produces and alters gravity; lightning, which produces a form of electricity (but remains partly as pure Force energy as well, to an extent depending on the wielder’s personality and their skill with the technique, allowing it to behave unpredictably and disrupt alchemical effects); and the forms of stealth and illusion that bend light rather than perception alone. Uses of the Force that merely manipulate the lesser forces can—with sufficient power or skill—be done through holograph, while actual production of energy requires physical presence. The second is the manipulation of mind. Empathy, Force persuasion, and the more common forms of stealth and illusion fall into this category. The radius affected depends entirely on the extent of your focus and mental awareness. Most can only affect those in front of them, and passively sense a bit further than that, but someone truly exemplary can reach across a fleet. The third is the manipulation of body. Self-enhancement is the most instinctive of these, innate to nearly all Force users. Healing is the gate between self-enhancement and true alchemy—and alchemy of course falls under this category. The physical burn of the Force, more apparent as your body adapts to the dark side, can be seen as any or all of these; while it’s tempting to consider it a purely mystical process, understanding it is foundational to biological alteration. The fourth, last, and most fundamental is the manipulation of one’s own Force connection. It covers the basic awareness awakening confers, acts as a needed secondary skill when learning and practicing techniques one lacks a full natural aptitude for, and is developed—at least to an intermediate extent—by meditation. At a higher level, it allows the guided immersion in the Force required for precognition, or (even more rarely) psychometry. It enables connection with physical objects themselves (rather than merely the energy flowing through them or the physical forces acting on them). It is vital in any true ritual, because ritual is the process in which the Force is shaped like a circuit shapes electricity. It is ritual we will now cover. You have been taught as an acolyte how to unify yourself with your own will. You have been taught that to touch the Force is to want something, and that to want is to touch the Force. Now you will learn to observe the movements of it and replicate those that produce your desired effect, rather than starting with the desire and bending the Force towards it. This may feel far less natural, of course, but if your will and intellect are in unison, the concept cannot elude you long. […]
