Today is #HiroshimaDay, marking 80 years since the devastating atomic bombing. My song Paper Cranes documents an emotional visit to the peace museum and an encounter with a survivor. Today and every Aug 6, I’ll donate any profits to a Hibakusha charity. sitenonsite.bandcamp.com/album/hirosh...

Lost several hours to the new ’Your Ears Later Will Know to Listen’ exhibition at Nottingham Contemporary, which explores “how sound connects us with histories, places and identities”.

Tested several different cassettes in the 414 today. RTM won every time. Imagine if the made a Type II. www.recordingthemasters.com

Fun with Oaka Instruments’ weatherised, water-resistant Tellus contact mic in the Pyrenees a couple of weeks ago. I like to capture unusual, earthy micro textures to play with later and use them to underpin songs about the place. The results are always interesting and, sometimes, eerily percussive.

My recent short residency at @campfr.bsky.social with other musicians and artists was a transformative experience, and the perfect start to this Summer's ACE-funded activity.

I preserved a little time each day to reflect and write; here's everything tagged Camp France. colly.com/journal/tag:...

Testing another USB-powered field setup in the garden, and it might be my new fave. Midi keys into Ableton Move; Portastudio 414 for tape textures, loops, pedal Send & return and overall mixer, all being captured (along with environment) by DR-40.

Seeing sound and feeling things: “Being at Camp has actually helped me shed any remaining feelings of inadequacy. I now feel like I too am a legitimate musician, with absolutely nothing to apologise for or doubt.” colly.com/journal/seei...

Another step taken: "I thought about it, listened to yesterday’s work again, and then committed. And so I worried about that for the rest of the day. But then again, I came here knowing I needed to find myself in this situation in order to grow." (Photo: Daniel Jones) colly.com/journal/anot...

Rain starts play: "It rained all day, including a very intense thunderstorm. I’m not sure anyone left the place at all, and most folks put themselves to work." colly.com/journal/rain...

Coumebière and Col d'Agnes: "In some cases, I crawled through on my knees and earned a few scratches or hooked my backpack. I also performed reasonably difficult diversions around wet and steep banks. Clearly nobody maintains these paths. Maybe they just gave up." colly.com/journal/coum...

Towering falls and tiny Firecrests: "I prefer to walk alone – setting my own pace, wandering off on side missions, and talking to myself. I also thought I’d move slower at alpine altitude, and I was right." colly.com/journal/towe...

May Day in Aulus-les-Bains. “I was awakened early by church bells, ringing a surprisingly melodic ditty for 7am. Usually, it’s just an hourly ding, the means by which rural areas sync their humans.” colly.com/journal/may-...

Arrival at Camp: “At 750m altitude, it’s around 10°C cooler here than Toulouse, but warm enough for us to sit outside in short sleeves until 10pm. Snow lingers on the mountains, but the valley is warming up.” colly.com/journal/arri...

A few faves from 2025 so far… Barker's masterful Stochastic Drift, Eiko Ishibashi’s exceptional Antigone, Yumiko Morioka & Takashi Kokubo’s soothing Gaiaphillia. Fave reissue: Rod Modell & Taka Noda’s comforting and sizzlingly ambient Glow World.

I found these old tape recorder books a while ago and they've proven surprisingly useful. Good to see #tapeloops were a thing in the ’50s.

- The All-in-One Tape Recorder Book, 1959
- Modern Tape Recording and Hi-Fi, 1963
- Composing With Tape Recorders, 2023 reprint

Some good news: I’ve been awarded Arts Council England funding to expand my field skills and develop conceptual ideas. The highlight will be a short residency at @campfr.bsky.social in the Pyrenees. Then in autumn, I'll resume work on the album and other projects. LOTS to come 😊

Deathbed Convert’s Inverse Field, Vol. 1 - Inishowen is my fave field recording release of the year. Connor Dougan responds to landscapes around Co. Donegal, improvising music and recording the results in place. Refreshingly, he includes everything he encounters. Kinnagoe Bay is especially good.
