Sisyphus with a Hat
@sisyphushat.bsky.social
I survived a lot of things, so I like to talk about what brings me peace and joy - gardening, birds, insects, houseplants, nature, cooking. Sagan Pagan, OBOD member. (He/him)

Geologist by trade. Born at CO2 329.58 ppm

Saskatoon, SK, Treaty 6 Territory
I had to dig a bit for this one - the 1920's is not my favourite period in art! However, Krogh's "Five to Twelve", c. 1924 is very striking.

So Sisyphus got himself a new hat, from Hats 'n That on Broadway, Saskatoon. Montreal-made too, 100% wool! Needed a hat for events, the precuous having reached a stage of comfortable disreputableness.

An old giant in Cathedral Grove, Vancouver Island. It was rainy in the rainforest the day I visited, surprise! This Douglas Fir is over 800 years old, and 76 m tall.

Light in the old forest. John Dean Provincial Park , Sidney, BC.

@irishrainforest.bsky.social , kept thinking of you as I visited some old growth, temperate rainforests in BC.

Well, on my way to my favourite deli this afternoon I happened to spot this modern dinosaur! First Pileated Woodpecker I have seen in Saskatoon.

The first ovenbird of the migratory season stopped by the garden this morning. They are so ridiculously cute. Also, I never knew that they are warblers! Somehow I never cottoned on to that.

Are you really photographing my butt?

This feather stumps me - I looked at the Feather Atlas and other sources, but can't find a good answer!

It's huge (30 and 40 cm), obviously a primary wing feather. The interesting 2-tone is wrong for a Canada goose, and I can't seem to find anything that really fits.

Found in Saskatoon.

No new birds today, but a really great looking new fly visitor - a ladybird fly, Gymnosoma rotundatum. It is feeding from my water parsnip.

Great start for a garden wildlife weekend: Ruby-throated hummingbird visiting my anise hyssop. It also visited the great blue lobelia.

Saw the cutest insect ever today! A species of bee fly called Anastoechus barbatus, no common name. It looks like a little flying cloud of fluff!

Are you taking pictures of me??

Downy Woodpecker in the garden just now.

With the morning rain, followed by wildfire smoke, I didn't spend as much time outside as I wanted to, but I did spot this little one new to me and the garden:

The Eastern band-winged hoverfly. When it sits to feed, it curls its abdomen in and out, which is rather cute. Arugula flower for scale.

I observed these bulbous structures right below the flower clusters on Missouri goldenrod (I think). Anyone knows what they are?
