MWIII had pathtracing. but only in the lobby which, i mean, at that point why the fuck would you even have it? it was cool for a tiny bit but quickly became clear that it was a pointless addition

i hope future CoD titles, despite running on the same engine, are able to become visually distinct

the only real complaint i had with BOCW's style was in one mission actually, and its just because it looked SUPER fucking flat and ugly during a scene

besides that, i like that it actually tried to push the tech still. it's the last CoD to have raytracing during gameplay (just shadows)

i will admit, i was a little hard on BOCW's visual style because it felt like a step down from MW 2019 in some ways. however, the fix shouldn't of come at the cost of Treyarch's engine getting flushed down the shitter

CoD's visual identity crisis is very much real, and i'm not talking about skins. visually, these games are so similar, it doesn't feel like there's any kind of technological process. there isn't even a unique art style, it's just modern call of duty. each series is identical, not separate

my partner, bless their soul, recently downloaded call of duty. they have no idea which they actually downloaded because they all looked the same. plus, the CoD HQ app doesn't truly give control over which you download on Xbox. you have to manage it first so you can choose which games you want

aaand now. MWII (2022), MWIII (2023), and BO6 (2024). all 3 use IW 9.0

MWII was made by Infinity Ward, MWIII was Sledgehammer, and BO6 was Treyarch. notice how similar they look? show it to someone with surface level knowledge of call of duty and they'd think it's the same game
November 17, 2025 at 6:44 AM
each has their own unique rendering style. Treyarch's is much more different from IW, much more so than Sledgehammer's engine

here's MW 2019, Black Ops Cold War (2020), and Vanguard (2021)

MW 2019 and Vanguard use IW 8, BOCW uses Treyarch's engine
